I decided to purchase a complete e-brake rebuild kit...pads, all cables, the works, because my 77 handle would pull all the way back before the was a hint of the e brakes actuating.
Put the entire kit on and same deal, you have to pull the handle all the way back, and the e brake is barely on. Won't hold the car even on a slight grade.
Did you adjust the brake shoes after you installed the rotor? There is also an adjustment at the end of the cable where it connects to the cable coming from the rear brakes. It’s most likely that the brake shoes need to be adjusted. See attachment.

Anyone have this prob and be able to solve it?
You have to set the adjuster between the front and rear cables. The service manual and AIM both have the proper setup procedure.
After 4 hours tonight I think I have it. Its just like all my other probs I come up against....1 in a million that nobody else has ever experienced.
The arm that spreads the e brake pads on the pass side is sliding off the rear pad resulting in no movement on that side, nearly no movement on the driver side and the e brake handle going all the way up, even with all the slack taken out of the system.
I had the same problem after changine all parts on the brakes and only the back cable. offcourse i then had slack in the front cable.
I will not say the e-brake work great now, but i got it true the EU controll. (have to get the car checked every second year.) Luckely te old cars dont have to be emission tested
Anyone who actually have this e-brake work as good as it does on a modern car???
My e-brake works good. Don't forget if you are using new pads that they should be "scuffed" to make it hold good after proper adjusment. The AIM procedure for my year says to take the car out and go around 50mph. While at speed slowly raise the parking brake handle just enough to have the pads start to touch the inside of the drum part of the rotor. Lower the brake handle and do this at least 3 times. This knocks the glaze off the pads and breaks them in.
Hey, I have been looking around for some parking brake kits, and so far, the best I found was eckler's, for 59.99. Does this sound like a good deal, or is eckler's low quality? Actually......I don't really care about the quality of my parking brake, in fact, I could care less about it at all, cept I need it to pass inspection, lol. So, where did some of you guys get your kits from? And did the kits come with the pads as well, as the eckler's does not.
I do some machining on the star wheels in those kits. Most come from Lonestar and with a little tweeking work well. PM me if you want a link to pictures that will help.
Hey, you live in New Haven. What year, and color is your vette? I bet I've seen you around from time to time......I live in Shelton, but I used to work in North Haven, and I shoot most of the New Haven rugby games.

This is one of my crusades! It will never work like a modern car or even a european car from 1975! It wont hold good facing forward on a sttep incline unless pulled back hard as far as you can---but it will hold if you are on a sttep incline and dont wont to roll back.It cant slow a vette down as a second break in emergency(fluid failure on main system)
Its aparently all in the adjustment, following the workshop manual implicitly. For some this works who swear by it,for others reading the forum(and i mean a heck of a lot) it just doesnt cut the mustard.
For Nations that have stringent hand/safety brake test we just got to do the best we can to pass and adjust after.
Just make sure you "burn" them shoes in when new as manual and hope.
Read all the post thru the years on this---it worrys loads of owners!
My crusade... well read my posts i want some one to re engineer a upgrade!
Dont lose hope Dont make do, persevere and good luck.

The installation directions? They're in the shop manual.

What shop manual? I have the haynes manual, and it does not have a set of instructions n how to rebuild the E-brakes. Where can I get the "shop" manual?
