After 2 years and almost 9000 miles my high pressure power steeting hose worked its way over to my side mounted Heddman headers. The results were a hose that has burnt thru and power steering fluid all over the engine bay. I made it home without a tow but I have a lot of cleaning to do.
So if you have headers that mount to side exhaust check your hoses on your power steeing. I need to see if I can reroute mine once I get a new hose.

Re: Power steering and side exhaust headers=trouble (ED DINAPOLI)
Thanks for the info Ed.Did you have a lot of smoke from the leak?
I had my oil pressure line to the guage break and the oil hit the headers
and I thought I had a major fire. :D
Re: Power steering and side exhaust headers=trouble (ED DINAPOLI)
I have a steering hose routing AIM sheet posted at http://www.corvettefaq.com under Suspension and Steering. It is entitled Steering Hose Routing (pic) - Steering Hose Pump to Valve. I realize that your headers probably make the environment somewhat different but the picture might help if you don't have one.
Also, be sure to traverse your steering full left and right and watch the hose movement. It's possible that the hose could only be contacting the headers under certain steering conditions (the hose moves with the valve on the relay rod.)

Tahos,
There was plenty of smoke, I thought I had broken a radiator hose.
Jim,
Thanks for the routing of the hoses, but the headers offer some obstructions.

Re: Power steering and side exhaust headers=trouble (ED DINAPOLI)
Ed, After 2 years and 9000 miles you finally made a sharp right turn? Let me know if you can find a p/s hose that is not made in Canada. Good thing p/s fluid isnt flammable! MJ
Re: Power steering and side exhaust headers=trouble (MNJack)
Mark,
I dont know why the hose moved it obviously was not against the header for 2 years. The fluid may not be flameable at exhaust temp [ everything burns it you get it hot enough] but it sure did smoke.
I ordered the hose from Muskeogeon Brake for $15.00, this is not an NCRS car so I dont care what the hose marking are. It would be nice if it was exhaust proof.

Re: Power steering and side exhaust headers=trouble (ED DINAPOLI)
MJ,
The (1968-1979) small block pressure hose is 3826277 and the (1980-1982) small block pressure hose is 7834409. They are available from GM dealers and are made by Delphi Saginaw Steering down in their plant in Athens, Alabama.
Ed,
If you look closely at the AIM sheet you will find that the high pressure hose is tie wrapped to the low pressure hose right up at the pump. Since the low pressure hose attaches to the brazed pipe that is part of the pump reservoir right at that point, the tie wrap will prevent the pressure hose from ever rotating in the pump fitting and changing position.
Rather than a tie wrap, some of the earlier Vets used a stamped spring clamp to hold the two hoses together.
Something like this might help keep your hoses from hitting your headers.
Re: Power steering and side exhaust headers=trouble (Jim Shea)
JIm,
Thanks for the excellent suggestion on the ties. I did not have the hoses tied together or secured in any way. I will obviously do this in the future.
