my 68 vette originally had a 327 and has a 454 in it now,
I have a newly rebuilt 350hp 68 327 so my wife wants me to swap it in as the 454 has collapsed lifter issues and she dosent like the sick hp the 454 is making and it is our car not just mine etc..
So my question is do i have to change out the motor mounts on the frame or will my small block bolt right up??
thanx for any input!!
The motor mounts are the same, but there's more to it than that. Pulleys and brackets, pumps, fan shroud, exhaust, and your front springs may sit too high.
Bolts right in, but as mentioned there are different exhaust, pulleys, brackets, etc. Maybe you can find somebody going SB to BB and make a trade; but get something to go with it, BB stuff is pricier than SB-especially exhaust manifolds.
Having a small block under the hood will give you lots of working room and it is simple to downgrade.
But here is my 2 cents:
many years ago I had a wife that nearly spent me into bankruptcy. She suggested one day that sell my Vette so we could pay some bills. I thought about it for a couple of days and made the right decision. I had a great job, a house, and a Vette. I get married and within five years I still have the great job, but i'm broke, mad about the wife bouncing checks........
I made the logical choice I told her to pack her crap up and leave.
It was like the sun coming out. I was happy again. Now years later my newest wife doesn't like my hot rod Vette. I don't care - it is not hers and she is never going to drive it anyway.
Thanx for the replies!! I have been restoring 1st gen camaros 68-72 novas and 68-72 chevelles for about 25 yrs as a hobbie, I have all types of pullies for long and short pumps, The fan shroud was modified to fit the BB when changed yrs ago and the springs are about 20 yrs old so they arent real stiff.
This is my first vette resto/fixer upper
The car also has bb headers and exhaust under the car and we plan on switching to hooker side exhaust.
I will probably switch to electric fans, one wire alter. and just needed to know if i had to switch the mounts on the frame as you do on a 67-69 camaro if going from bb to sb.
Thanx again Tony

your going to miss that big block, but if you swap our parts car has a perfect s/b fan shroud

Vettes use a different water pump. It is a Corvette only water pump, close but not exactly the same length as a normal short chevy waterpump. You may be able to set it up with Camaro parts, but check all of your clearances and alignments carefully. I recommend staying with Corvette. If you have Big Block Vette brackets to sell or trade it should not be a problem.
blunblk, I also think your going the wrong way. I would sell the 350 and rebuild the 454. But, if your set on it, I would sell the BB pulleys for some premium cash on Ebay, ppl always looking for that stuff. Motor too. That is unless it's the original motor. Then I would say, what are you thinking? Of course it isn't unless they stroked an original 427.
And George. You kill me. You did say your "newest wife". Does this mean wife number 3+? I can't say I disagree with you though, my wife has been pretty cool about my upgrades on the vette this year, but we have also had some pretty serious fights over it as well.
We both love the BB it is a non original 73 truck 454 with factory L88 391984? heads that have been hogged out to handle 2.5 inch valves, and a dual quad set up. all this was done about 12-15 yrs ago and car was not drivin much so every time we drive it somethin seems to fall apart!
So i want to make it safe and reliable for her to drive when im not with her!! Hence the 68 327 with a single 4 barrel , It will still be very peppy as it is an 11:1 compression fuelie 202 heads with roller rockers, comp 280 magnum cam, new flywheel,11" clutch pressure plate, throw bearing, pilot bearing, water pump,starter,etc......
We arent into the numbers matching thing so i plan on selling the L88 heads using the cash to rebuild the 454 with new aluminum heads and if she lets me put it back in the vette if not it will go in my 71 chevelle!
I know i will miss the BB in the vette but she never pushed it past 4 grand and for good reason!!
This is kinda her first hot rod so a 454 with around 650 hp is a bit much!!
Thanx for all the help i plan on usin energy poly motor mounts on the new 327.
Gator (Mark) i may take you up on that SB fan shroud!! you should have just sold me the damn car!!!LOL

Just so you guys know... I'm helping hubby rebuild Vette #3. I love 'em as much as he does! We're not all bad
That's awesome! That's the way that my wife is. I've been married for 9 months. When we first met and she asked me if my Pontiac 400 had a Holley carburator, I knew I found a good one. I told her that I have a q-jet and she said, "oh yeah...those are good." She then asked if I have headers......
