Found a place right close to me that sells VP race fuel. I am right on the brink of detonation and some fuels are Ok and some will detonate. A little race fuel should help this out. He sells 3 types of VP. The C16 which is $62 for 5 gallons is overkill. Recomended for blown engines and guys running lots of N2O. The MS109 at $52 for 5 gallons or the VP Red at $42 for 5 gallons. I'm thinking all I need is a gallon or two of the VP Red for a fill up should work fine. He is trying to get me to use the MS109. More money in his pocket! Does anyone use this and had any experience with this.
If your only aim is to increase octane to prevent detination, a bottle of STP octane boost, or the equivalent would be cheaper. You can buy it buy the case at sams or costco.
I use Sunoco Racing fuel.. I pay $8.25 per gallon for 116 octane (which I'll use when running nitrous).. Unfortunately, they don't have 112 octane.. I buy 112 octane for $8 per gallon at the track..
What's your setup? I vaguely remember it being fairly close to mine, and I never hear detonation.Maybe the vacuum advance is too much,or you could try a cooler thermostat. Beats the hell out of $8.00 a gallon if you put major miles on her.

No vacuum advance. I on occasion get some bad gas from some of the stations and I can hear it sometimes. I figure if I throw in a gallon or so I'll stay out of detonation. I don't put many miles on it. Car stays at 180 degrees. Runs fine with decent gas you just never know what you are getting.
You want to be "real careful" choosing VP fuels to run in your rides. This particular brand seems to have a much higher rate of premature deterioration on valve seats. More specifically, exhaust seats.
I've had 2 units here recently with "leaking" (exhaust) seats. The first one was with a pair of new "335" AFR's. Seats went down in about 2 months while "sitting" on the stand after some dyno testing. Never made the installation before it had to come apart again. Second unit left here tonight with new seats installed. This one had a couple years on it but still should not have gone "bad" this soon.
I've warned most of my guy's using this fuel to "fog" the unit when it is stored. This advice was given to me by a friend in the Pro-Stock ranks, seems they've had similar issues with the same fuel.
I did have a conversation with Jason (VP rep) a while back and he confirmed our findings!
Personally I would strongly recommend the "Sunoco" brand, as an
"additive", for most "true" street cars if possible. Octane "booster" in a can does nothing, actually tends to separate out of the fuel in the upper RPM bands.
Thanks, Gary in N.Y.
P.S. If you can avoid "race" fuels as an additive I believe you will be better served in the long run. Remember, most guy's "racing" are inside the units yearly (or sooner), or at least they're supposed to be!!
That is good info! Mine does sit for some extended periods of time. I'll look into the Sunoco fuel. I have found also the Octane boost in a can is pretty worthless.
If you are looking for small quantities of race fuel close, you can also check with local Kart shops. What you find will be dependent on what is raced locally, but Shell 96 and various 110-111 fuels are common.
These guys are used to selling 1 gallon and up at a time and will pump it into your container. So if you are mixing it you can get just what you need.

Sunoco oughta be plentiful in your neck o' the woods..... I've seen some AM/PM Stations (Sunoco with food ) in Florida with an extra pump, selling Race Gas, but I haven't looked to see what the octane-rating is (like a stock Cross-Fire NEEDS race-gas..... )

You're right about that. One day the Vette wasn't pulling as hard as normal, and I pulled the air cleaner just to have a look. There were water droplets on the throttle plates! $3.00 a gallon and you get water!!
I had some detonation at 36 degrees timing so i mixed 2 gals of citgo 110 to each tank of fuel, det. went away. Then i read on the forum that gkull had talked to dart 10 years ago and dart said they got more hp with 32-33 degrees timing. i went to 34 and no more race fuel (no det) seems i rembember reading that he said all fast burn heads should run 32-33 degrees. maby he will chime in here. Might want to give it a try with yur afr heads, i think it feels stronger at 33-34 timing.

Gordon, I get Sunoco at a local pump for my Kart for just over $6.00 112 octane leaded
Here in NorCal, there are a number of suppliers for VP, Trick, etc., but I typically gas up at the local track (Sears Point) with Sunoco leaded 100 octane if I'm going on track. I ussually put in about 5-6 gallons (from close to empty), burn most of that up on track and then top off with SUnoco 98 unleaded for the trip home. $4.50 for the 98, $6.50 for the 100 last time I did it this spring. This is in my BOSS 302, the Vette runs fine on 91 octane..
