Hi: I'm a new forum member from Ohio looking for some assistance with 3 issues I have with my C3 82 Collectors Edition.
(1)My ac/heater control unit in the consol has no illumination. The owners manual shows a bulb #553. I have a full assembly manual on the car which doesn't show any bulb. I have looked over the unit and can't find a bulb or socket
(2)I have owned this car for 3 years and the fuel gauge didn't indicate below 3/4 full no matter how low the tank was. I was waiting till the fuel pump would give me trouble before replacing the complete assembly, fuel pump and sending unit, thinking the sending unit was the problem. I have just replaced the whole unit because the pump failed. The pump works great but now the fuel guage doesn't move above empty no matter how full the tank is. I have found that there is no power going to the sender wire. Would the fuel gauge or printed circuit board be bad or something else?
(3) The remote side view mirrors are not operating. They were at one time. I believe it might be the toggle switch. If any member agrees, where may I obtain a replacement?
Help!!!! I look forward to your response.
Where in Ohio? You neglected to complete the member profile.
Fuel Guage issue. Sounds to me that you have a bad ground on the sending unit.
Any of the Vette vendors on this site will have a replacement mirror switch.

There is no bulb fitted as such.
But if you look between the a/c vents on top of them is a fisheye light which shines down and illuminates the ac/heater control
I thought the bulb was a 558 but any way its in the upper dash and shines down on the AC control. The bulb has a little lens on it to focus the light beam.Be very careul when you replace it-when you tilt the center cluster forward the bulb socket will try to tear the upper dash.
Fuel gauge-bad tank units were common-but first test your wiring and dash unit---turn ignition key to ON and remove wire at tank sending unit and the needle on dash gauge should read past full--ground the sender wire and it should go past empty--If this happens then its probably the unit in the tank but check the tank unit ground as said above.
On the mirrrors check the radio fuse and then move to the brown w white tracer wire at the switch and check for 12 volts.
Thanks for your response. I'm located in Cleveland. I will check out that ground suggestion. The fuel pump is on the same ground wire and it works. I would think the sender would too.
Thanks for your input. I believe the bulb location you indicate is the one that illuminates the gauge cluster and that is working. I can't see how that light would get past the radio which is below it.
George
Forget all the above. I found the bulb location just as you described. THANKS,THANKS,THANKS

I've seen that many times. The bladder bulges out just enough to keep the float from moving. Bending the float arm out just a skosh to clear the bladder bulge may be the solution
Thanks for your suggestions. I did remove the wire at the pump/sending unit and the fuel guage goes past full. When connected the gauge goes to empty just like you say. The unit is new. I purchased it from Corvette Central. I will check the ground and also check 12 volt power to remote mirrow switch

The 82 has a hard plastic liner not rubber.I guess the liner could bulge but I have never run into it-plus with gas pushing outward I dont know what would cause it to push away from the metal unless there is gas behind it.Hmmmm Interesting
I'm not familiar with what a bladder is in relation to the tank. Is it part of the pump/sending unit? The wire to the sending unit is tan with white stripe and I'm not getting any current to it but am getting current to the pump which is a pink wire. The ground is connected directly to the unit.

The bladder lines the inside of the tank to make it more puncture resistant in an accident. The tan wire is a ground wire for the gauge.
Hi DWncchs:
My mistake. The bulb is a 558 which I have purchased. Regarding my fuel guage problem, I did as you suggested. I disconnected the sender wire and the needle went past full. When I grounded the wire the needle didn't move at all off the past full mark which means I have a ground problem with this wire. Do you have any suggestions where I should start to correct this. This is the only remaining electrical problem I have with the car. I have a full wiring diagram on the car but it's a little difficult to follow. Any tips would be appreciated. George

Where was the needle when you disconnected the wire? Did you actually see the needle go from empty side to full? The reason I ask is if you saw it move that would mean you do have power to the gauge. With power to the gauge and grounding the wire at the tank should send it to empty. If it doesnt it and there is no movement it could mean -the gauge is bad,-you didnt get a good ground on the tan wire,-the GAGES fuse blew -or there is an open in the tan wire circuit.Check the GAGE fuse and then I would ground the tan wire directly to the negative term. on the battery to be sure.If this doesnt send the needle to empty I would pull the center cluster and check the plug that goes into the back. Its about 10 wires and plugs into the printed circuit. The printed circuit is very delicate at that plug in point.Check it good and straighten out the contacts if they are messed up.That is a very common place for the tan wire circuit to be open.
