Default Lug nut "lock"

I bought a car at auction and the rims have a keyed lug nut. Years ago i got one off with vice grips - but this one is particularly stubborn.

I got a deep socket over it - first with some rubber but it didnt bite enough, then i used a socket and had some 8 gauge copper wire and hammered the socket on - it still didnt have enough bite.

I have lotsa tools but i need to decide best (easiest and with minimal risk of damage to rim) approach.

I am considering:
a) tack welding a socket which can be driven onto the end
b) using jb weld inside a socket that can go over it
c) cutting disk on it to release some pressure
d) parking the car on south side of town

What say you?

Heard a large pipe wrench works well. Might also check the local salvage yard, they must get cars all the time with missing locks and should have a number to choose from to get the wheels off to sell them.

A tire place I always go to has a variety of the lug keys for wheel locks! You could try calling a couple in your area. Also That looks similar to the lug nut that they sell at autozone maybe its the same. I believe you have to buy a complete set and its like 20 or 30 dollars.

None of the above choices. Chisel and a hammer.

Beat a socket on it

No soft metals either

You will probably break the socket though but it will come off

You could probably weld a nut on it also

Air chisel if available, those ****** take locking lug nuts off very easy. Good thing most rim thiefs don't carry on board air.

I would weld a nut on the end. You can weld a large cheap nut throught the hole in the net. Less sparks flying that way. BTW, I'd grind off the chrome on the end before welding.

I assume you have 4 of these to do and I personally don't have 4 crap sockets that are the right size to weld/jb weld/etc on.

Had the same problem with a girlfriends Lexus a while back. she had it towed to a wheel works,, what they did was beat an air wrench socket (hardened metal) on each one, they came off but the sockects (4) were a loss at 5 bucks each.

As stated above, Tire shops and car dealers can make short work of that lugnut.

It would seem like you could cut or grind off a section to make a socket or wrench fit over the end. Then with enough pressure with a lever it may come off.

Hammer a socket on with a big mallet and take it off with an air gun. If that doesn't work buy the lock remover kit. Or take it to any tire place they will have no problem with it.

Default done,

I got the Sunex 2840 for 35.93 (link in post above). A breaker bar wouldne get it off because of slip.. but a air impact wrench AND the socket made short work of everything.

Default Lug Solution

Had this exact same problem on a 78 I bought 20 years ago. It was easy to weld on a standard lug. Take care of the surronding wheel.

I was always loosing my keys, and the lug nut socket I bought at Sears got the nuts off easily. So easy that I don't bother with locks any more - a thief will have the same thing and it works so good it's quiet and effortless.
