Is anyone out there running just electric fans? I have a 71 and I'm getting ready to pull the engine for a rebuild and I would like to eliminate the mechanical fan to help clean up the engine compartment. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I put a BeCool radiator on my 71 coupe this summer with twin Spal fans, they work great. The fans turn on at 195 and off at 180, in less than one minute they turn off! Very powerfull, highly recommend them. The engine compartment looks great with the fan shroud gone, you will really like it. I am also in the process of rebuilding my motor, just pulled it out two weeks ago. Good winter project!
I measured the core area on my radiator and it is approx. 17X17. The dual fan set ups are much larger than this.(approx. 16x26) Do yours overlap the core on each side? Thanks.
I've got an 82 all stock. I bought a 3 core brass/copper rad from radiatior.com and a set of dual 11" Spals behind it. Haven't had a bit of trouble. In fact I had the upper hose go out on me and lost about half my coolant and she never budged over 185. Plus I would recommend a bottle of motor max. And I guarontee you'll see an improvement at the rear wheels.
I only have an electric fan. Bubba project, you can read more in the technical section of my page.
In our climate, with summer temperature around 20degC ( 68oF) the fan is only needed during traffic jams and long stops.
The fan has been running max 5 times this season.
My Radiator is 26" wide and about 18" tall. The dual Flex-A-Lites fit perfectly.
I don't believe there is a real need for the fancy aluminum radiators. They just lighten your wallet....( OK if you really feel the need to lighten the front end of your car, I suppose it would help.
If the stock rad can cool my big small block I think it can cool most anything!
And yes it's been tested! At the Car Craft summer Cruse last year it was in the high 90's and I spent a LOT of time driving around the fairgrounds without it getting hot at all. I've also been autocrossing with it and it kept it's cool just fine.
VetteBoy;
460 Hp, 500 ft/lbs, enough torque?

I'm running only electric fans on my Purple shark. I have it on a switch instead of being controlled by thermostat. This way, I can cut it on early in anticipation of heating problems, like getting in heavy traffic.
Hope this helps.

Sounds like you have the same set up I had. Your car must be a small block without air. I just Changed my radiator, fans & Core Support to the 26 in support .... Check out this thread - it's got all the info you'll need! http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=173121
