Getting sick and tired of leaky power steering. First its the hoses, now I think the valve is leaking and my pump is squealing at least I think it is the pump as I have the belts tight. My question is what do I need to convert to manual steering. I know I need a different pittman arm. Do I also need a new relay rod because in the catalogs I don't see one listed for manual steering only a relay rod rebuild kit. Anything else? Thanks.
I am going the oposite direction , contiplating power steerring manuel is so heavy feeling & slow ratio.............. think you should drive a non power steering big/block first .......drop by & you can try my 66. your 502 probably wieghs more than my 427................ :flag :) just food for thought.
Thanks for the replies everyone. Stray Dog thanks for the invitation that is one beautiful 66 you have there. How bad is driving it without power steering, I drove a Chevelle without it and it didn't seem too bad. Just seems like it would be getting rid of a hassle and a few more ponies to the ground can't hurt either.
I like having p/s with my bigblock, mainly because the ride up my driveway and into the garage has a very tight turn. Otherwise, I dont do too much parallel parking with the vette! :) But since it was mentioned, aren't the new 502s lighter than a 68/69 427? Is there some aluminum in there? MJ
69ttop502 (bill) I'm not sure it's the right thing to do, but i blew a hose a couple of weeks ago and just dis-connected the power steering pump (took off the belt) Have driven it a little, and it seems fine. I don't mind the heavier feel. Have the hose's, but not sure i'm hooking it back up right away. If somebody knows if this is ok to do, please advise. Thanks, JCL :chevy
Everytime you turn your wheels you're pushing air through your now dry cylinder and valve, and it will wear out your seals pretty fast, I wouldn't recomend it.
Last year I bought a rebuilt control valve, cylinder, pump, and all new hoses from Zip. I still get red drops in my garage. I think they all leak!!! My 66 Mustang has the same setup, it leaks....
Thanks for the replies everyone. JCL (Jim) I am still trying to get some pictures and am still enjoying the hell out of my new exhaust thanks to you. Does anyone know if it is a different relay rod for the manual steering.
Yes, the manual relay rod is different. I comes as one piece with the stud that goes into the pitman arm. The power relay rod is threaded to take the control valve. Zip Products has it listed as SC-542 69-76 Rela Rod w/o PS (rebuilt) $139.00.
