... My 2c is wait until you can afford a new one from LL. If you buy another old harness, you might just be replacing problems you already have, with even more problems...
Agree.
The Lectric Limited harnesses are great. The wire harnesses' (thickness, length, stripes, colors) and connectors look the same as the original harness. Just unplug the old harness and plug in the new LL harness - worked easy for me.
I don't know much about Lectric Limited, but the information quoted above is not accurate...
Good info Gearhead, but that was just what I was told. I do know that Lectric Limited won't build new 81/82 harnesses but will refurbish them, however, they will not refurbish 80 and earlier. They will only make new ones for those years.
I don't know if there's any difference, but we were talking about Corvette harnesses when LL told me that...
I am still an electrical super conductor and my refurb'd dash harness from LL looks great
To answer the initial question:
Every year is slightly different in pin location-especially at the bulkhead. It is possible to plug different year harnesses together, but without moving wires they won't work. For example in my '69 I used a used '72 instrument harness and new engine harness. To keep the fiberoptics I bought a new '69 forward lamp harness and moved the connectors to mate to the '72 fusebox. I believe the rear lamp harness is the same '68-'71. It is possible to use any '69-'76 complete car harness if you account for turn signal fixtures, fiberoptics, center cluster (seatbelt lamp) and options. In '77 the connectors on the center cluster and a/c controls changed dramatically-maybe the bulkhead too.
I also echo that 'Lectric Limited makes great harnesses and Last Detail has the best prices on them.
The bidder you beat out earlier today on the used 1974 Main Dash Harness (GM calls it an Instrument Panel or IP harness) was me! I had no idea until I read this thread tonight.
That harness looks real good in the picture. It will definitely work for you. Be aware that not all IP harnesses are the same. In 1979 the basic IP harness had about 180 wires in it but there was a second harness that supported options and it had over 200 wires. I don't know the numbers for the '74 model but the principle would be the same.
Sorry 'bout that. I figured I'd take a gamble. If I find it's too far off what I have, maybe I'll give you another chance at it. The plan is to match the 74' harness pin locations to my 73' hacked up harness. Any tips on relocating the pins easily? I did find an issue with my doc rebuild schematic. My bulkhead connector doesnt match the diagram on the schematic. So if anyone has a 73' dash harness laying around, can you verify which is right, my connector or the diagram?
I bought a 1974 tilt column on this site cant get it to fit 1972 plug in not the same any answers would be great thinking about switch plug but not sure colors are different on them 4 wire one side 6 the other different colors thought any answers www.jerrywhynot@yahoo.com or ph 734-250-1066
