Default Exhaust question

Seeing some of these header posts got me thinking. After I get the 1972 coupe up and running again, I want to tackle the exhaust. It has ceramic coated headers with 3" collectors, however these are bolted onto the stock 2" dual exhausts. What do you guys recommend? I really like the sound of the Mid America 2.5" chambered exhaust, but am open to suggestions.

My only requirement is that I keep the exhaust exiting square rear exhaust ports.

I would say that it is a matter of potential $$$$$$ one would want to spend. I am currently running ceramic coated headers on my rig with 3 inch custom welded exhaust running out to the stock exhaust pipes. Lets just say the headers and mufflers totaled over $600.00 and leave it at that.

But the exhaust note is

I have the full length Hooker headers followed by the Allens Exhaust 2.5 chambered exhaust exiting the rear.
The sound is great. Cost was fair and I had Allens keep the front sections of pipe since I had headers and they discounted the difference.

I have got the chambered exhausts on my 350 72 together with headers: I LOVE that sound but must state that it is pretty loud under load. A friend of mine has got the same combo just with the standard ram-exhausts instead of headers: That car is much quiter. So headers really do make a difference here.

Be advised that you need a new exhaust-hanger bracket (bolted to the rear of the tranny) as the stock 2" version will not center the 2,5" tubes properly in the transmission crossmember. For a TH400 it is the most expensive of all hangers there are (you need the hanger for the 1970+ 454 big-blocks which came with 2,5" exhausts from the line), I think about 50$.

You also have to tailor the tube-section from the headers to the crossmember yourself: MID-America delivers two 4 ft. tubes with the set to do that - good thing is, that this set is only 199$ instead of 299$ with tubes up to the ram-exhaust.

After all, this exhaust was one of the best investments in the car - soundwise it changed my car into a mellow-growling animal - love it!!!!!!

BTW: Power gain was noticable, too.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info and suggestions! I've been working WAY TOO MUCH and my forum time is now counted in seconds, not hours :( Looks like exhaust will be my spring project :yesnod:
