From what I have, the heads on the L-48 and L-83 are the same casting. 77 is 333882 and the 79's were 462624, so the real difference is forged crank, pistons and cam plus the rear Y-pipe was 2.25 for the L-48 and 2.5" fr the L-82. For engines 30 years old, I'd still go for the L-48. They both suffer from breathing and headers and real duals will help both. Most of the horsepower difference seems to be in the cam and compression ratios. I may be wrong though, regardless, get the best engine.

I waited for a 4 speed. It turned out to be an L82 to boot.

Yep, I was in the same boat. Thing is, if you're fulfilling your dream as a kid by getting a corvette now, you'll be wishing in 5 more years that you fulfilled your dream to get more power later. Not that the L-82 offers a whole lot more power wise, but if you do end up modifying the block, you'll be much happier with the forged crank and flat top pistons already in the block.

And these days I dont' think price is differing much between a 77 L-48 and L-82.

The L-82 shortblock is the same shortblock used in the 1971/72 LT-1. Put a replacement LT-1 cam, performer RPM intake, & headers, & you have an easy 400hp at 6500rpm. You could do this with an L-48, but the cast pistons/crank won't hold up twisting to 6500rpm.

Default L82

L82 has a stronger cam identical to the L48 but made of stronger material.

Dunno. Also, why do people revive threads that have been dormant for 6 years?

I'd say because there is already information in existing threads to build and comment on... it shows people use the "search function " rather than reinvent the wheel all that many times more starting the same threads over and over every other day... It saves time rather than having to rediscover and restate the same facts... its funny how I'll search for a topic here and one thread could totally going the opposite direction and missing important information that another has depending on who seen it and commented.
'Jerry Joe" posted a few fictional facts though.... like the reasons for the .060 gap on his 75 he mentioned in another thread... not sure if someone is feeding him some bad BS or he's making it up?

Yeah, but it's the TORQUE that gets the car off the line and as both engines have the same bore and stroke, the torque difference between the two engines is minimal, and therefore the acceleration.

I've got L48 engines in my Vettes, and am quite content with their performance. I drive conservatively so would notice little if any difference if I had an L82.

Regards from Down Under.

L48 performs better at lower rpms and l82 at higher rpms... both are compromises...
