Default OUCH!

Brought the Pace in for rear brake job and carb overhaul. Also had a rear end leak and told them to look over the entire E-brake system. Good thing I was sitting down when I got the news. Water pump leaking, pinion seal leaking, tranny seal at the rear leaking, entire E-brake system junk. In order to fix the trans, the tail shaft has to come off. Looks like I am doing the 700r4 upgrade early. Oh well. This thing will be sweet when I am done with it.

that rear tranny seal is a piece of cake.
Unbolt the u-joint, drop the drive shaft, pull the rear yoke from the tranny. Make sure to have a drain pan handy as that tranny is going to dump all most of the fluid.
Pull the rear seal, put a new one in and put it all back togeather.

Believe it or not, except for perhaps hte pinion seal (I've never done that one) all of this is typical and not that difficult to do. I did the water pump, e-brakes, rear tranny seal and lots more myself a couple of years ago and I hadn't wrenched anything but my back in many years. :smash:

I'd say if you did the work yourself, you could easily do all of this for 300-500 bucks guessing. Perhaps even less assuming you don't find anything else while you are in there.

You could even pull the rear and drop it off some where for fixing. All this is of course assuming that these types of things would even be something you'd consider wanting to do yourself.

Then again, the 700R4 would be schweet!

i have to agree with 78vette about everything except the pinion seal (as i havent done that either!!!)...

waterpump (30 bux) with lifetime warranty...

e_brake takes a bit longer ta do especially if the rear is still riveted.... blahhh...

tranny seal, no problem!! easy job. might as well put in new u joints when the shaft is out... get em pressed at a machine shop for $10 bux.

I don't have the time, it is my only car, (at the moment) and I was planning the 700r4 anyway. And one biggie, I don't have a garage to work in. The tranny seal (?) that needs fixing is not the one at the end of the tail. It was explained to me the tail section had to be removed to get to this particular problem. I will be going over to the shop tomorrow and will look at all of this myself. These guys have done work for me before and I get a dealer labor rate. It is a Corvette only shop. I consider these to be major repairs and I don't have the experience to tackle them. Engine rebuilds, no prob. This kind of stuff, I let the pros do it. They did my entire front end and did a good job too.

Do not let other people work on your car. They will do the work the fastest way,not the best way. They will use the cheapest parts and charge you for top quality parts.Your car is nothing more than a meal ticket to them. These years corvettes are pretty easy to work on.Even if you have to do the work twice you will still end up with a better car if you do the work, and with all the money you save on labor you can get twice as much done for half the price!!! :yesnod:

oneof the biggest pain n the butt jobs I did on my '72 was replacing that silly damn pinion seal....
I did the job, pumpkin in and outof the car 4 times before finally noticing the housing was in fact defective from the factory, the seal was NOT CONCENTRIC with the bearing....so it leaked....
now it MAY have been abused, but I just can't see how.....the seal fit perfectly, so it seemed....

so I changed housings, and no more troubles......what a bitch of a job....

I supply my own parts, most of the time. I am buying the 700r4 from Bowtie overdrives and my calipers from Muskegon. When it comes time for the engine, I am buying the parts and doing the job.
