The efficiency, and probably performance, would take a hit if the timing was backed off enough to compensate for the octane deficiency. And, life is going to be hell for the exhaust valves with the resulting exhaust gas temperature due to retarded timing. This just sounds like a risky band-aid adjustment.
I'd just put a set of street friendly pistons in it, and the rest of the octane and timing issues disappear.
