I finally have a 454 block that I can use (the other one had two cracked cylinder walls). I was surprised to see Hi-Perf Pass stamped on the block, this block was from the '80s I believe. I wasn't aware that there were any high performance passenger cars in the 80s ;). I examined the cylinder walls...no cracks but it does have a slight ridge so I will be having it bored +.030 as planned. It only has 2 bolt mains but hey, I'm just glad I could finally get a hold of a 454 block. I picked the engine up for $350 shipped to my house, which was a heck of a lot cheaper than anyone around my area was asking for a 454 block.
Piece by piece I'm nearing my goal. I can't wait until I start assembling it :) My 3.70 rear end should be coming in about a week or two from now also :D
You gotta get a few track runs with that 3.70 rear with your existing setup. I remember doing some number crunching for you months ago. You had a pretty good existing setup w/3.70s. I think low 14s. Anyway, it'll make a good baseline for you when you get the monster installed. Good luck as always!
Bence, I recall from many months ago you had mangled your rear end.
Did you exchange this, or just buy a whole new setup??
If you did exchange, how much did they deduct from you??
Can you refresh my memory... I think you had a busted ring& pinion, but didn't you crack the case too??
Who did you wind up getting it from??
Yea the rear end was toast. I twisted the posi case in two, exploded the posi packs, snapped 3 teeth off of the ring gear and 2 teeth off of the pinion gear. The case however was in perfect shape. I didn't exchange the rear end....there's basically nothing ot exchange :). I have the case and exploded parts sitting up in my garage to show all of my friends. I purchased the rear end off of a fellow forum member. The rear end is freshly rebuilt so it's ready to be bolted in.
For the future, I think if I get some extra $$$, I'll pick up a 4.11 rear, and that way I can swap the rear from 3.70 to 4.11.
Chances are, though, I'll just fall in love with the 4.11, and just keep it in there full time.
I'm still running my stock yokes, the HD yokes are a little out of my price range. I wanted to go with the 4.11 rear end but I'm afraid that it would be too much gear for me. The 3.70s will be bad enough on the highway let alone a 4.11. If I didn't drive my car so much, I would have gotten a 4.11 rear end.
