My son has a 76 that has been bastardized (read - has parts from many other vehicles.) He went and got the radiator hose for what should have been the right year but one end is the wrong size. It is the lower hose with the elbow. The one we took off had both ends large - the supposed replacement has the water pump end large and the radiator end small.
What do I need to tell my son to tell the autoparts counter?
There is an early and late version, I believe. As stated above, take the old one with you to the parts store. BTW, this is a good idea for any part you are trying to replace.
I'd recommend that before you make another trip to the local auto parts store, call Dr. Rebuild. Or perhaps any of the other Corvette parts houses you read about in this forum.

Why? The parts stores carry hoses that are quite good. It's just a matter of getting the right one, which should be easy with the original hose.
I would take the old hose in to the store and see if they can match it up with something. He probably needs one from a different year.
If the car is not original, your son won't be able to tell the counter guy anything helpful. He probably got the right hose for the car, but if your car isn't original in that area, you'll never get the right hose by talking about it. You need to bring the current hose in...

This would not be a good idea. First they will only carry Vette parts and not very deep in their inventory. Second their computers will not recognize other makes of GM cars where local stores will be able to bring out hoses resembling what you have with a much larger inventory to chose from. You will probably get the wrong hose from the vendor because of their limited inventory. The locals carry parts for all makes and models not only Vettes. The prices would probably be 1/2 at the locals and with top of the line brands too.....
