It had one from the factory. Whether it should have one is probably up to you. It was designed to cool the combustion temperatures to lower Nox emissions. Removing it might increase emissions, possibly create conditions conducive to pre-ignition, and may be illegal if your state does vehicle inspections. None of these problems is difficult to overcome.
Thanks Steve, we live in texas...any idea on emission levels here? I think previous owner removed it. Should i re-install it? will that help performance (ignition / idle etc...).what do y'all think?
'73 was the first year for EGR across the board....it allows innert pre burnt exhause gasses into the intake to allow for leaner gas, and less incoming air, at those off idle light throttle traffic conditions....
it makes the engine behave like it's less displacement.....
I think it does nothing for economy, but hurt it....
disconnecting it without re doing the carb settings in the off-idle transferr circuit will make the car bog crazy in traffic, but run fine at WOT....assuming everything else is right....
the early intake manifolds were very restrictive of overall flow rates due to the extra passages taking up plenum/runner room in the designs....
EPA lovers think it all was great in cleaning up the 'air' but in fact it did nearly nothing, the clean up was due to DPFI and closed loop operation, but that's another thread....
