Default Oil Consumption ????'s

On a rebuilt small block, how much oil consumption is normal during break in? What is considered excessive? How long does it take to break a motor in? What contributes to excessive oil consumption on a rebuilt engine?

I'm guessing you have a fresh rebuild, broken in, and consuming a lot of oil?

Start with how much oil it is consuming and how miles you have. Also, it would help us if you can touch on your break in technique. There are two popular methods...each with several phases of break in.

Yes I am having problems. I don't want to influence any responses with my particular experiences at this time. I am looking for some specific guidelines as to what is considered acceptable and/or unacceptable.

Consumption depends largely on the finish of the bore and the type of rings used.

I have seen chrome rings take as long as 10,000mi to stop and cast rings wear in almost immediately. Others in between.

This is assuming you have no other probs.

Mine burnt a little oil, I remember perhaps 1/2 a quart or so for the first few thousand. It doesn't burn any now, I don't even check it between oil changes anymore.

I have 25,000 miles on mine now, remember after break in and after a couple thousand miles a new motor should not burn any oil, perilod, if it does and depending how much it uses, you have problems.

How did you seat the rings ?
