Hi all, I am new to the forum ,this is my first time posting.
I just bought a 74 vette i live in the northeast and am trying to get on the road before the end of the season. I need a gas tank mine came with an 18 gallon the ones i have seen available are 18 or 24 gallon, the dimensions for the 24 gallon are the same as my 18 gallon. i know mine is 18 gallon because it filled up with 9 two gallon pails of water. Any advise here would be appreciated, i just want to make sure I get the correct one the first time.

my stocker on my 73 was 17 gallons and replaced it w/the ones the vendors advertise as 24 gal which when i put them side by side they were exactly the same and when i filled up the new one it took exactly 17 gallons

the gas tank looks nice! did you paint it or powdercoat it?
i painted it and w/a paintbrush to boot. i used por-15 ceramic engine paint, just love that stuff, leaves no brush strokes and looks like it's been powdercoated when it dries.
When GM adapted the tank to accomodate the non-leaded fuel nozzles, they not only decreased the large tank opening to the small hole for the non-leaded nozzle, but they also extended a tube in the tank tank opening so that it extended an couple of inches into the tank. This prevents the tank from being filled and also creates an air bubble on top of the gas. I suppose in a rear end collision, the collision force that might crush the tank has a less chance of rupturing the tank if it has an air bubble in it. This air bubble decreased tank capacity by two or three gallons. So if your year of C3 has this tank in it you can replace it with a 68,69,70 tank and gain a couple of gallons. (or maybe there's some way to remove the extention tube.)
I thought the early C3 tanks were 20 gallons.

I believe the filler neck dictates how much it will hold. The neck that extends further down in the tank gives it less capacity.

Hmmm Air Bubble - Wonder if that long neck and lack of fuel at the top of the tank coincides with the loss of the fuel vapor seperator?
