i have a stock 77 350 with california smog. I just replaced the plug wires, plugs, cap and rotor. I changed to a crossfire cap and had to pull the distributer to line up #1. I put on a advance kit, I had to change the weights because the plastic bushings in the old weights were worn out and I could not find bushings that would fit them. I then set the timing per Lars post. Everything seems to be dead on. My specs require 8 dgrees advance @ 500 rpm. Im all in at 3000 rpm runs great idles great runs about 190 dgrees. all seems good. Then I went for a drive. 30 miles mostly hiway, stopped for dinner 2 hours later started up and it wont idle. It drops below 500. I drive the same 30 miles home and pull in the driveway it stalls, starts right back up and now idles perfectly. I cant figure out why the rpm idle changes. It did this before and I rechecked everything and all was still right on. At one point I increased the idle adjustment and then it idled to high.
74 k miles on original motor.
I also put on new vacuum lines. no leaks, steady vacuum
I checked the choke and found the rubber hose on the warm air tube was cracked so I replaced it and then checked it out and it works perfectly. Im not sure that was the problem but it idles great right now. Im thinking that since the car was sitting alot before I bought it that I may have some gunk in the idle circut. I put some carb cleaner in the gas tank and will drive it for a bit and see what happens.
Crap in the card is a definate possibility, might do you some good to put in a new filter and maybe pull the top off the carb to have a look at the bowl
I forgot to mention I did change the fuel filter, I just put in a can or seefoam carb cleaner. We went on a 400 mile cruise and never had one ounce of trouble. So I guess Its fixed for now.
