The cure I have found to work fine for me, is drill/tap to 1/2 16? size threads, about a 1" long bolt works...I just took a dremmel and enlarged the slots to clear the larger bolt....
unless you can find someone to weld...but it outta there, then re insert...PIA....do it the simple way...
been some 12 years now since I did mine, seems fine, not that I have bothered to check on it....
If you can see the hole you can get a helicoil kit, enlarge the hole a little with the drill in the kit, tap the hole with the tap in the kit, install the helicoil with the tool in the kit and put the correct bolt back in. Did I mention to use the stuff in the kit? If a single helicoil isn't big enough to fix it find a machine shop close to you that can get a double or triple helicoil. We use them all the time in aviation and they last much better than regular metal does.
Guys, thanks for the help on this. I used a tie rod end seperator to split the strap. I slid the tool between the Z-bar and birdcage then hit it with a hammer. Based on the thickness of the z-bar I've decided to have nuts tack welded on the back.
I tried runnning a 10mm tap through the holes but the threads werent cut deep enough for my liking. When I finish up later today I'll post a bunch of pics.
