I have the timing at 11 initial and 36 total. No vac advance, 70 jets in a holley 750 dual feed. It isn't blowing smoke or backfiring any more. But, when idling after reving it I makes this thumping sound. Is it a mis? All new plugs and wires and it runs smooth.
I just took it out, it was running good, then when I was pulling back in to come home it started backfiring out of the exhaust. Not sure what the deal is now. I need to get somebody over here that knows more than me.
EDIT: I let it cool off for a while and started it up. Checked the timing and everything was fine and it ran fine like it did before. Is having my timing come all in at 2500 to soon or something.
Sounds like a miss to me. Need to check those new wires and plugs for fire, could be as simple as a poor connection. Sounds pretty healthy other than that.
just curious..... why no vacuum advance hooked up?
There are definite advantages to using the vacuum advance system - typically better idle charaterics, better throttle response, lower operating temps, and better fuel economy.

JESUS CHRIST, don't start up on this subject again!!!!!
Its set right don't touch it, move on to something else.
Example: trickle you some water down the carb at fast idle so it doesn't quit, this will clean the carbon off the pistons.

just because YOU choose to run with the vacuum advance not hooked up doesn't mean there are not advantages to it, whether or not you wish to recognize them.
what, you think car companies put on the vacuum advance system just because they wanted to add extra parts to the car for nothing? If you really understood how the vacuum advance system works and why it's there you would better understand the benefits to it and not argue against it everytime someone brings up the subject.
Just because you choose to not use it don't tell people it's not needed or has no usefulness because by doing so you are doing nothing but spreading incorrect information.

Thank you, Barry. I spent 24 years at a major domestic automaker, specializing in ignition and ECM design. It drives me nuts seeing the sheer silliness expressed at times in this forum. I no longer have the energy or interest in correcting these guys anymore. I appreciate your efforts to, as a wise man said, "push back the frontiers of ignorance". Keep up the good work.

So does all the emisions equipment, cat converters and two into one exhaust and 215/70/15 tires!
And im not spreading incorrect info, you just want to hear it incorrectly!

Pre-emissions 'Vettes from the '60's even had a vacuum advance. The benefits are you can cruise with 45-50* advance, yielding cooler operating temperature and increased fuel economy.
