I just installed a set of Jet Hot coated Hooker Super Competition headers and sidepipes on my 82 Corvette this past weekend. I also removed the AIR pump, outer water pump pulley, and all the brackets, lines, valves, relay, etc. related to the AIR pump. The check engine light does not come on. I have had it up to 50 mph for about 10 minutes since, with no light, but have not tried long-term highway cruising. If the light does come on, just keep the relay plugged into the harness and remove the rest.
I've been running my 82 for 4 years (and 23,000 miles) without the AIR pump & haven't had any codes come up. Go for it!!!!!! :) :) Make sure that you retain the use of you Oxygen sensor with your headers . The Cross-fire Injection won't work well without THAT!!
I put headers on my '82 last year and removed all of the smog plumbing at that time, before that I had left the fan belt to the smog pump off for years. Never had any problems before or after. BTW, I couldn't see any difference in power with the smog pump or without.
I've since installed a rebuilt air pump (for the smog test), which was about $40 from wrenchhead.com.
I must admit I can't tell any real difference in the performance, with or without, so I'm just going to leave it hooked up.

I'm replacing the passenger side exhaust manifold (cracked) and I"m putting back the A.I.R. components that were removed. They are on the drivers side already so making the passenger side compliant shouldn't cause any noticable change in performance. I hope..
You won't get a code..the AIR divert valves are controlled by the ECM bbut not monitered for position or whatver. Pull it off...it'll run & look much better w/o all that stuff cluttering your engine bay.
