Default 69 Vaccum Headlight/Wiper System Problem

I am having a problem with my lights raising and wiper door opening and then closing when I start the car. Also, when I jump on it the headlights sometimes come up.

There are no vaccum leaks in the system when the car is running. Idle is great and when I pinch off the vacuum supply at the manifold there is no change in the idle. Everything seems to operate great. I replaced the check valve near the intake manifold connection with no change.

Any secrets will be appreciated!

You must have a leak somewhere or a little everywhere. There is a yellow striped hose that feeds the headlights and the wipers. At the T pinch off the yellow going to the wipers and see if the headlights work better. Then pinch the yellow going to the headlights and try the wipers and see if they work better. This will tell you which half has a leak. When you figure this out you can move on to which relay or actuator is leaking.

I'll give this a try but think it must be something else. keep in mind the headlights snap up smartly and the wiper door works immediately, no lag.

The above test was for the BIG vacuum hose side.

The "switch" for UP and DOWN is vacuum and on the LITTLE vacuum hose side!!!
Vacuum applied is DOWN
Vacuum removed is UP
small hose test-with the engine running-pinch the small hose going to one of the relays-wait a min.and tell what happens.Do this test to all of your relays.Report back keeping what happened per relay seperate.

It sounds like the check valve. Did you check to make certain that the check valve you replaced is working properly? Is the Vacuum Tank holding vacuum after the engine is shut off? To be certain, are you sure you replaced the check valve and not the filter?

Just checking.

The symptoms do sound like a check valve and/or filter issue, at least on the surface.

Otherwise, it sounds like an issue with the control (small vacuum tube) side of the system. A leak in that side of the system could cause the startup problems if the control side isn't de-pressurizing as fast as the actuation side of the system. For things to move when you step on the throttle, the control side would have to have a pretty prominent leak.

Do you have a vacuum pump, like a mityvac? Disconnect the small tube from the check valve and draw it down. How much vacuum will it hold and for how long?

I've made several posts over the years related to the vacuum system. You can do a search for my username and use "vacuum" as the keyword. Make sure you check the archive box and the C3 section.
