My '72 Stingray, 350 automatic with air, tends to run a little hot (200-210 degrees) when driving heavy traffic. The previous owner removed the original fan clutch and fan and replaced it all with a 6 blade fan mounted on an extention to place it closer to the radiator (probably a cheap fix to a faulty fan clutch). The blades are appx. 2 1/2 inches at their widest point at the end closest to the hub. This doesn't seem very efficient.
I am looking to replace this set-up and install a new fan clutch and associated fan with the wider blades. Does anyone have a suggestion as to which set-up to purchase: Flex-a-lite, Hayden, GM replacement? The temp sender unit is correct, and the radiator shroud is sealed sufficiently (no air leaks). Any suggestions?
I'd suggest the stock set-up with the correct fanblade and fan clutch. This combo works well.
I'd stay away from the flexfans. They tend to break and when they do they like to take big chunks of fiberglass with them.
Besides having the shroud sealed correctly, make sure you have all the radiator seals in place along with the airdam under the nose to get the proper airflow up to the radiator.
Thanks for the info. My air dam is OK and all seals are fine. I rarely use the AC as I drive with the tops and rear window removed so the car hovers around the 200-210 temp mark without the AC. I've never liked the current fan blades because they look so inefficient (narrow blades) and I am upgrading to the correct clutch and blade set-up. I do feel good about the 200-210 temp range being "normal".
Thanks again,
Jim
