Default Firewall Insulation

My original firewall insulation is pretty ratty on one of my 73's. I have everything in and around the dash and firewall removed and want to replace the FI.

Here's an option:

http://corvette-paragon.com/catalog/...B-10DE9CD994FD

...but it's somewhat expensive. And, perhaps there's something that's a more effective heat barrier that costs less. I don't necessarily need pre-cut insulation, but want something that will make for a "clean" install.

Advice welcome and photos encouraged. Thanks!

Several years ago I was faced with a similar problem and the FI was not available. I was told they were made by a guy in his barn and at that time he stopped making them. If you are not into NCRS you can make your own. When I did mine there was not a source of materials like B-Quiet and all the similar types of adhesive backed sound deadner and insulators. I used some old jute from under the old carpet and made a piece that looked like a gasket for my heater box. After making that shape, I coated one side with black silicone sealer and laid it on a piece of Saran Wrap. Then, I coated the other side and covered it with wrap. I taped it in place under the heater box and installed the box in place to maintain the correct shape. After it cured a couple days I had a perfect gasket for my heater box. With the materials available today, why not place some on your firewall and cut out the hole under the box. The box will seal itself against the insulating material. These are my thoughts on possible options.

Default JC Whitney-generic dynamat

This is what I plan on using. Just tape in place and run a permanent marker around the holes from the engine bay side, then cut and paste. Should be enough for the entire car. 4ea. 4x6' rolls "dynamat" type insulation, plus the tape and adhesive included for $89.99 delivered. Didn't think I could beat that. Check it out:

I had to replace my interior harness last year, which required total disassembly of the dash. I went the Dynamat products; Installed Dynamat Extreme first from the firewall to the front seats and then the Dynapad on top of it. Also added Dynmat to the doors and the rest of the interior this summer. Have noticed a drop in interior temperature as well as better sound insulation as well. Not cheap, but you will only have to do it once.
