Default LS1, 6 speed conversion for 73 manual,.

I would like to put a late model LS1 type motor with 6 speed in my 73. I guess the best source would be a late Z28 or similar. Has anyone done this and what would the best source of components be for this. I would like to buy the one car and use as much of it as possible for the conversion.
Thanks

yes using an fbody car would be better ,a few guys will chime in about the 6 speed since i use an auto i cant help there, but as fas as pulleys and oil pan the fbody stuff fits much better .Your gone to love it,its a pleasure to drive my 73 now.If you look a fewpages back theres a ongoing post about ls motors and whats needed.

LS Engines? +'s & -'s?

A very informative LS thread that has been running for some time now.

Yes, I am aware of the threads that skirt this situation. I have read them many times but they do not cover what I am after, which is why I submitted this thread. I was hoping for something more than the std "look at these threads". I would not have submitted this thread if the answers I am after were in those threads.
I am 10k miles away and need to get the research done properly before I start this task, I cannot just go to the local auto store and pick up the bits I need like you can in the US especially as I am unfamiliar with all the models of cars you have over there.
If I choose the correct donor car then most of my problems will be solved. I do not want to end up having to change oil pans, move alternators, AC pumps etc just because I did not do my homework and got the wrong donor car in the first place.

Is any year Camaro better, I have found a 2001 Z28 with 6 speed etc but I seem to remember somewhere reading that 2002 was a better engine - I am not sure why.

You should be fine with the 2001 in fact in 2001 they started using the ls6 intake on the ls1's ,its just that in 2002 some ls1's were actually ls6 blocks. But that would sway me from a 2001 at all.Im using a 99 block but with all 2004 internals and ls6 intake.

Since you are already down there, couldn't you pick up a wrecked Holden Monaro or Commodore? Same engine and trans, might be easier than shipping a Camaro to Australia.

To answer your question.

For LS1
1998-2002 Camaro Z/28 or Camaro SS
1998-2002 Firebird Formula or Trans Am
2004 GTO

1998 uses a different PCM with different pinouts.
2001+ LS1's use the LS6 block and use the LS6 intake.

For LS6
2004-2005 Cadillac CTS-V

For LS2
2005-2006 Pontiac GTO
2006 Chevrolet SSR
2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer SS
2006-2007 CTS-V

Thanks for that info. I probably could pick up a Commodore or Monaro with that motor and trans but the cost blows out. A wreck from one of those would still cost me in the 30k range. Cars in Australia are still very expensive, especially when you consider that the GTO in the US (same as our Monaro) is way cheaper in the US. The Monaros start around 60k in Australia.
If I can get a Z28 ir similar for around 5k, it costs around 3k to ship it. I am way ahead.

Instead of buying a complete car why not just buy the engine and trans and have them shipped? it should cost a lot less than $3K in shipping for that. There are plenty of places on the web that specialize in Camaro dismantling. One place I have seen a lot of LS1's advertised in is in North Carolina if I remember right.

True, some of those places will send you as much of the car as you need. Pretty much you want the engine, accessories, air intake, PCM, engine wiring harness, transmission, shifter, pedal assembly, clutch hydraulics, exhaust cut off past the cats.

I put a ls1 in my 73 but I used the A4 .I bought engine and trans. from F -body.com.Bought it off ebayfor $3700 complete. The engine is a 2002 WS6 Ram Air Trans Am with 27,000 miles.
Pat is right you can't use the ac compressor.I used a mount from performance automotive from California.

I think it would be cheaper to ship the engine ,trans and related parts than a whole car. The only way I would ship a whole car is if i had everything else sold.

Good luck on your swap,

Charlie.

Sounds like if he got an entire car he may be abel to make back some of his money by selling what was leftover if cars are that expensive over there.
