help - reverse lockout problem

help - reverse lockout problem
The reverse lockout on my stock shifter keeps popping up everytime I go to first and third. Shifting to second and fourth causes it to snap back down. Any ideas on what the problem may be, and would a rebuild kit solve the problem? Thanks. I'm getting tired of pinching my finger everytime it snaps shut.

I take it for granted that the spring in the shift lever has not broken.
I would look for binding in your linkage that is moving your reverse rod on the tranny causing your reverse shift lever to force the pin up.

Thanks, I'll check it out, but no the spring is not broken. When in either 1st or 3rd even when manually applying downward pressure the reverse lockout will not disengage. It does however snap down when shifting from first to second or third to fourth. As soon as I shift back to either first or third again up it goes.
