im looking to put a flowmaster on my 68, and its in the middle of being restored, and the body is off the frame, and engine is installed, now can i put the exhaust on now or do i have to wait till the body is back on. the exhaust place told me i had to have the body on, but im pretty sure i have seen pictures with it installed before the body was put back on. Any suggestions???
You can put the exhaust on w/out the body. The only place the two meet is at the back, where the bezels are. The hanger at the back will hold the back of the mufflers. The front clamp at the frame pass-through is unmoveable, so there is no reason why you need the body on that I know of. You can tweak the pipe twist to fine tune the bezel gap later. Good luck, post some pics!
Best to do with the body on. You can loose fit everything and hang it but chances are you'll be dissassembling it to trim the pipes. The reason being, most pipes are made overlength so that you can cut to fit. You also need the body on to determine the floor clearance for the front pipes. The rear spring clearance is not be a problem either way, but as mentioned there is the issue of twisting and aligning the front and rear pipes so that the extensions exit level and both sides are even and in the center of the bezel. I have found it best to wait. Just my opinion.
I don't see how you can do it the body off. You'll want an inch clearance from the fiberglass body (floorboards etc) as the the tubes meander from the front to the rear. Guessing would be a bad idea. And as stated above, it would be nearly impossible to align the tips without the body on the frame.
