That piece screws in and puts tension on the ball stud. Be sure to get it tight enough when you replace the components behind it. You will need to grease the ball stud and the seats upon reassembly.
Sweet thanks for the info, I got it all apart and cleaned. Does it matter which direction the seals face? particularly the one on the 2 inch cylinder. I dont want to install it backwards.

Yes it matters. Follow the directions carefully and take extrta care when fitting the halves back together. You will need to work the seal in so you don't pinch it.
THe most important seal, I believe it is called the annular seal (about an inch in diameter) is crtiical to have in the correct orientation. I read an article by one of the experts indicating that this is the most common mistake and will cause poor performance.
You need to do the reearch, but I believe the seal fits on a metal assembly and the rubber portion faces the ball stud. I remember seeing the rubber part of the annulus seal as i placed the piece with rod attached onto the valve body.
I kept my parts stacked exactly as they came out. Let me know if you can't figure it out

looks like you posted a few minutes after I did last night. The paper tells exactly how to put the valve together (lip up or lip down) and It was pretty easy. The problem I had was that when I took it apart I accidently dumped everything on the table and so I couldnt remember which way it went back together, I ran in here and posted on the board without reading the paper first
