Hey guys, took my daughter for a ride today on the Interstate. I noticed that when I am cruising along at 80mph, and let off the gas completely, I have a popping out the exhaust pipes. I never noticed it before, and the car seems to be running fine. Is this normal?
It's probably just an exhaust leak, which isn't really that uncommon. You might also want to get under there and make sure you don't have a hole in your pipes. I hope this helps. Ohh yeah, and your catalytic converter might be the cause but it wouldn't be the first thing i looked at.
ohh that's right...duh! (feels stupid now) I wish I knew what to tell you then but good luck. I'll try to do some research on it and get back to you, even though i'm willing to be someone on the forum knows exactly what's wrong.
How are your headder gaskets??? I know when mine start to leak (even before you can hear them) I'll get a pop from the exhaust when I step off the gas.
The only other time I get it is when I get gas that dosent agree with the car! (i.e. bad gas or too low of an octane rating)
Eric, that sounds like BIG trouble! I 'll offer you 6grand for your broke car :smash: Just kidding. look at your cap and rotor, wires and plugs can cause this too. Hope to see you next weekend at the vette stravagansa!! in New Orleans. Thad :blueangel:
The popping is usually from unburned gas igniting in the tailpipe or muffler. If you just had the car tuned and it wasn't doing it before, I would suspect that either the jets were changed to a richer set, or the timing was retarded too much making for incomplete combustion and unburnt gas.
Chuck, interesting comment. I had some backfiring once (also occurred when letting up on gas) and I discovered my front exhaust pipe was completely broken!! so, i naturally associate an exhaust leak with this problem. More recently, after changing my entire exaust system I had some popping which sounded like it was coming from the mufflers. This time i discovered I had some pretty serious leaks from the joints in front of the mufflers (due to my crappy installation). I used some exhaust pipe sealer and tightened everything up and it helped a lot (eliminated any noticeable exhaust leak) but I am still getting just a little popping... Now I might try advancing the timing just a touch and see if that stops it completely. MJ
You are right in that there must be oxygen for the exhaust gas to ignite and this is worse when and where there is a leak. Yet, there is often still some O2 in the exhaust. More if not properly tuned. In extreme cases you can literally blow the exhaust sytem right off the car! Induced backfires's can be very impressive and EXPENSIVE! (While driving, shut off key while in gear for a few seconds, then turn key back on. Raw gas in muffler ignites and BOOM! Bye-bye mufflers! Flames shoot 20 feet out back of car! Kids, don't try this at Home :D )
Chuck
whrn i was 17 i shut the key off all nite long with some friends in the car
Well, i have the key off and from the opposite way comes an unmarked police car! So being 17 and dumb, i turned the key on just when it gets next to us!
So we cut thru a development with lots of turns (never exceeding 25mph) and head back home. I noticed a lot of police cars on the drive home, but thought nothing of it (17 and dumb).
So we switched cars(17 and smart), and went out. When i came back hours later there was a note on my car that the police were lookng for ME!
I used to do something similar on my bike. If there was some crotch rocket sitting just a couple of feet off of my tail light (makes me :mad ) I used to accelerate up to about 80mph &, if the bloke was still in the same place, would hit the engine kill switch, give it a handfull of throttle for about 1 sec & then turn the engine kill switch off. Having megaphones fitted with no form of baffling, I'd get a huge bang & the bloke looking for a race would be enveloped in a sheet of orange flame :lol :reddevil (great at night).
That used to give me great entertainment, until a mechanic told me that he'd once seen the remains of an engine that somebody used to do the same thing with. The force of the backfire forced an exhaust valve open just as the piston came up. Good-bye engine. I haven't played that game since - pity really, cause I used to really enjoy doing it :)
(Popping in the exhaust on shut down can also be caused by an air leak on the intake).
