Hey guys, I'm new to this whole thing, just recently bought a 79 vette, with a blown engine, so I purchased a second hand one from a good friend. Now, the engine had been sitting for awhile and I was told to make sure it still turns over, by turning it by hand, Im ok with that but I was just wondering if there is anything I should do befor doing this. (Spray WD40 down spark plug whole, tranny oil , some sort of oil??)
Again it hasn't been run in a while, has no intake manifold or exhaust headers, but was well kept so that nothing would get inside.
Just some Ideas on a first time turn over would be great!
Was it at least covered up?
Not knowing for sure what your getting, I would go ahead and pull the heads off and look it over real well. A set of head gaskets don't cost much, especially since you will need most of a top end kit anyways. Pull em, wipe the bores down, make sure there is no crap in the intake and exhaust ports etc, then put it back together. It will only take 10 minutes to pull the heads. Cheap insurance
Yes, the engine was covered very well he stored it inside. Theres no problems with the engine, It was fine when removed from vehicle so they could put a bigger engine in. He just decided he wanted to keep the intake manifold and carb.
Well stored has a variety of interpretations. If you don't want to pull the heads then pull the plugs and spray some penetrating oil in each cylinder and spin it over a few times after running the oil pump with a drill so the bearings aren't dry. If it has more than say 75k miles and If it was me I would change the oil pump and timing chain while it was out, which should be under $75. I would do the chain and pump and run the pump to circulate oil before I spun it over more than enough to line up the timing chain.
