im pretty sure its not legal to run without mufflers.

i went with hooker max flows and they are very loud.
i hear a lot of good things about STS spiral baffles so you might want to check those out

I second the JCL/STS spiral baffles... the stock inserts rob HP!
I went open headers for a while and its just tooo loud!
Get the spirla baffles and "uncap" them... perfect volume and sound!

how do the max flows compair in loudness and sound to the spirals?

i was thinking of going with no inserts also but i am thinking that will be just too loud and could be a problem with law enforcement. my friend has a big block with no inserts and it is just too loud for the street.

im making ~400HP with the spirals and it sounds very loud at idle, and WOT... just on the edge of being too loud... like a full out drag/race car. The sound is really good as well... but remember if this is too loud for you, you can always put the cap back on and quiet it down some... either way, I love mine! I dont know about that max flows, but any other side exhaust vette ive seen just didnt sound that great or was it very loud.. again I dont know what these max flows are though.

A friend and I each have '69s with 454 stroked blocks and 4 inch side pipes. He has the spirals and I have the max flows. If you want the deeper throaty "old fashioned" rod sound, the max flows are for you; they're similar to the "glass pacs" we used to buy years ago. If you want a crisper slightly lighter tone, get yourself the spirals. Both will set off your neighbor's car alarm, both will require ear plugs when cruising down the road any great distance, both are fun, fun, fun.
One more suggestion, buy a set of Bangkok Dean's heat shields so you don't burn your legs. Check them out at www.steelshields.com

I'm also planning side pipes with the 383, any sound clips anyone?

My 1979 L-82 4spd has the hooker side pipes. First tried no mufflers, but was banned from the road race track(black hawk farms raceway in Wisc) for being to loud. It would be to way loud for the street, but it's fun for a day or so to do. The hooker max flows are 2 1/2" center openings in the mufflers(for big block motors) while the regular flow mufflers from hooker have a 1 7/8" center opening. The max flow sounds the best I've tried all three set ups. It's a deep loud sound where the spirals are more hollow metal sounding. It depends on what you like.

I have the Hookers side pipes on my 383. I ran the glass pack inserts at first, then went to no inserts and finally to the max flows. The max flows are deeper sounding bass then no inserts. Also the max flows produced more power at lower RPM then no inserts. Sound effect I could really tell no difference with no inserts and the max flows out on the highway. As far as the spirals I have no experience. I will try to get my wife to bring her work camera home to record the audio file.

The local law enforcement here in Southern California agree with you, the open side pipes are too loud, and they even gave me a nice pink piece of paper to help remind me! Ouch!

I had Hooker Glasspacks with mine. I didn't really like them. Got a set of Sweet Thunder 2-1/2" inserts. My car picked up alot of power and sounded 100% better than with the glasspacs. Just my opinion.

I'm running Max Flows with my 4" sidepipes. They have a deep powerful sound without being overly obnoxious. They are 99% efficient and produce 23% more power than open headers according to Hooker. I really like the sound from them, it was the right choice for me.

Got glass packs and reverse flows with my BB Hookers. Never did use the reverse flows (they're available, btw), but I'm going w/Max Flows when I get it running again.

Here's a halfassed vid taken with a digital still camera. exhaust tone is a lot deeper than in the video.
I've tried just about all the available mufflers including some fabbed up jobs, and the Max Flows sound the best imo.....

Even though it's hard to capture, when compared to the deep tones of the Max Flows on yellow 72's, the Thunders sound like an aluminum bat vs. wood...
