It is very difficult to properly adjust a steering box in the car. There is a GM service procedure for it but I think you still have to disconnect the pitman arm. It is best done with the steering box completely out of the car using an 0 to 30 inch pound or 0 to 75 inch pound torque wrench with the box secured in a vise. You can do some serious and expensive damage to the box if you adjust it too tight. If the steering wheel does not return freely on its own when cornering and you have to pull it back, then it is adjusted too tightly.
If you have a lot of play in your steering, check your rag joint, all your suspension and power steering components (and wheel bearings) first before messing with the box.
