What is the difference between a 350 small block chevy and a 400 small block chevy? The reason for asking is there are two engine blocks on ebay, one is a 350sbc and the other is a 400sbc, and my brother needs a engine to beef up for his 75 L48 Stingray. So the question is, whats the difference between the two engines?
The bore and strock are probably a little differnet then the 350, but its still the same block. You can use a 350 block to make a 400...the 400 might have a bit more HP then the 350 also...
400s are externally balanced. If you get one, get all of it, including the harmonic balancer. If it were me and the two engines were otherwise in the same condition, I would go with the 350 and leave the 400 alone.
:)
Ganey is correct, 350 and 400 blocks are not the same.
If I recall correctly, the bore centers on a SBC are 4.4". If you bore out a 350 block to a standard 400 bore (4.125") you'll end up with an 8 cylinder anti-freeze pump.
400 blocks got away with this due to the fact that they did not have water jackets between the cylinders, as Ganey pointed out.
