Default almost stalls when in gear

I checked a bunch of stuff but found nothing so I was hoping someone here could help.

Its a 77 w/ a 383 and a edelbrock carb. It runs fine when in park but when i put it in gear the idle drops and the car almost stalls.

I check for vacuum leaks w/ a smoke machine and there aren't any. Replaced the fuel filter and it looks ok. I haven't check the timing but, would it matter since it runs fine in park? If the timing were off i would think it would run like crap all the time.

Someone suggested the converter may be bad but it almost stalls without the car moving so i don't know about that.

Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

timing timing timing, it is the most important thing to tune your car. set the timing at 36 deg at 3000 rpm and then adjust your screws on your carb. it will be fine then

You checked for vacuum leaks... OK. how much manifold vacuum is there, actually?

Don't know. I'll pick up a vacuum gauge tonight and check. How much should there be?

Im going to check my timing tonight but a funny thing happend yesterday. I started it up and it ran fine. Idled good and everything, until it got up to temp. Then it started with the stumbling and almost stalling. Would timing effect a engine differently when its hot as opposed to when its cold? Anyone know what changes occur with temperature that would cause the engine to behave that way? Seems strange.

Maybe you just have the idle set too low? That's not hard to adjust. I'm assuming you know rpm drops when put into gear from park or neutral. If you're running air, it'll drop even more, so make sure to accomodate for that.

Check choke operation. Sounds as if the choke is not fully open when the engine is warmed up.

Do you have a big cam in the engine? If all the other suggestions don't work, it maybe too much cam and a low stall speed converter. When you put it in gear, a tight converter may pull the idle down below where the cam can keep running.

Didn't have time to check the timing lst night but i'll do it this weekend. I don't understand a few things though. It runs fine as long as its cool, as soon as its up to temp is when it acts up. Would the idle mix/timing somehow change based on the temp of the engine? The idle speed drops when i put it in gear but if i put it in gear and its cool, everythings fine. Its not even running hot. It holds steady at 180 degrees. Very strange stuff.

I know that an engine can vapor lock if the gas gets too hot but i think that stalls the engine completely right?

One other thing. Im used to holleys but this car has an edelbrock carb. Are the idle mix screws the 2 on the front of the carb? (front meaning toward the front of the car) My mechanic sent the carb up initally so im not sure.
