Default Speedometer Drive Fitting

I have a '72 Stingray, 350cu, Turbo 400 auto transmission. I have the wrong transmission speedometer gear (38 tooth) and need a 42 tooth (green) gear. I have read somewhere that there are two transmission drive gear fittingsthat the speedo gear inserts into; one for 35-39 tooth gears, and one for 40-45 tooth gears. I am assuming I have the drive fitting for the 35-39 tooth range, but how do I tell? What is the difference between the two drive fittings? Or, have I heard/read some bad information?

You heard the truth......each fitting has the particular tooth range stamped on it, and the orientation it fits into the tranny to seal properly. Physically, they look almost the same, one just fits larger diameter driven gears.

Thanks for the quick response. I've ordered the new gear, and I will have to order the larger fitting as well. Thanks again!
