Default Quick Stripping question.

Why do the instructions say to not use a metal scraper? I feel I could have done a much better job with one. The plastic ones dulled out too fast. If I'm light and careful with it I can't imagine that I'd damage the surface. I still have the top of the hood left to do.

Steve, I used a hard plastic scraper that I bought at Home Depot. It was made by Kleen Strip. It worked great. I went thru about 4 of them on the whole job.

Funny you mention that, I got a plastic broad knife and putty knife at Loews today. They were like 75 cents. I think they'll work a lot better since they are more rigid than the other scrapers I was using. The handle will probably make a big difference too.

The only guess I would have is that metal is harder than fiberglass. Plastic is softer.

Because of that, metal is going to be more likely to damage the fiberglass underneath...

I just stripped about 80% of my 81 and I started using the plastic scrapers but changed to a metal one that has a handle and two metal lips at 90 degrees from handle thus making it a two sided scraper.the lips are only about 1/4 in deep.It worked well for me and alot faster than the plastic ones.I didn't use it in the curved areas,I used the plastics there.I have spent about 4 days part time and I have it mostly done now.I used kleen strip and I found you need keep it fairly thick and don't brush it over.Just lay it on and let it work.In about 5-10 min it was bubbled up good. Each time i strip a section I washed it down with soapy water many times and then dried it.I have used a gallon in qt cans so far.maybe need one more can to finish. wave on ! \ ////

... i'm using a razor blade, i only have a few nicks to fix so far but talk about easy.

You start off in a nick or ding and work your way out, it slides right under and sprays you with paint chips, you can do a whole t-top in 2-3 minutes... and it doesnt scratch

Hope you can use this info, (or somebody else :jester)
