Default Rear wheel stud removal on a 74

I first thought this was going to be easy until I found out the stud will not fit behind the spindal, as it hits the brake plate (?) Anyone know if there is a easy solution to putting one in ? Thanks All !!

I was never able to change mine on the car. The bearing carrier had to come apart to do the change. There were enough people that claimed that they were able to change the studs to convince me that some cars must have more space than others. Look at the 6 O-clock position and see if you will have room with the brake adjuster removed. You might also consider that you could put a shorter stud in until you are ready to do wheel bearings.

The 9 o'clock position on the drivers side and 3 o'clock on the passengers side works for me. I don't have backing plates and can install 3 inch studs easily. Without the backing plate just line up these spots and with a hammer tap it out and install the new one. If you have backing plates I don't know if you can loosen and move the backing plate to one side.

I went through this project last year on my 68. I ended up sending the spindle to Bair's after I almost screwed up the threads on the spindle. I thought it would be an easy job until I realized that the studs will not clear the backing plate. Good Luck, Craig :chevy

I never could get the correct stud in either. I removed the parking brake adjuster and the large spindle nut, and used the spindle remover tool to push the spindle out of the carrier just a little bit. This gave me the clearance to get the stud in. Then pull the spindle back in and retourque the spindle nut (replace with a new nut if pos). Don't push the spindle out any further than necessary, or you risk knocking the outer seal out.
