Default blower relay replacement

hello all, this is my first post on this board, although i've been researching it and found some very useful info so far. i bought a '69 coupe a couple months ago and have been replacing all the relays and switches systematically. long story short...i bought a new high blower relay to replace the one on the car that looks awfully strange and i can't find any reference or picture of the like on the net anywhere. the one currently on the car is about 2.5" square with a fuse on the bottom portion, 4 posts, and the new one is a 4-post replacement for sale on all the websites like ecklers, corvette america, year-one, etc. they look nothing alike and i don't know know which post to attach which wire to. the current one has a red, black, blue and yellow that goes through the firewall and a red that goes to the starter, and a black ground to the a arm. any info would be greatly appreciated.

Default update

ok, thanks, i ordered the assembly manual to help me out. i received the replacement blower relay and to my surprise it plugged right up with existing connectors and is not the relay in question. like i said, this thing is about 2.5" square with a fuse on the bottom and 4 very small wires (maybe .010 in diameter at the most) that go through the firewall and 2 normal sized wires, a red that goes to the starter and a black to ground. i cannot for the life of me figure out what this thing is.

i have figured out that there was an orange wire that comes off the high blower relay that had become wrapped around the steering column and then stuck in the clutch pedal spring near the bulk head connectors. it tore about 16" off the end of the orange wire and disconnected it from wherever it is supposed to be connected. it is still conected to the connector on the blower relay. can someone please tell me where this orange wire is supposed to go?

so the orange is just a "hot" that goes to the alternater? i'm guessing from the above post. if that's wrong, please let me know. that makes sense considering the the pics of the part i just ripped out of the car. it has a hot and a ground going straight to the starter through a terminal block mounted on the passenger side fender well by the a/c tube thing (haha). the car still runs after i ripped it out. the ac works on all but high (the orange wire?) (rpm drops like a ****, and i am 'bout to die from holley double pumper fumes in the garage ). It appears to be some kind of aftermarket hi-blower relay, with alternate, aftermarket wires running to switches inside the dash. my concern now is...where does the other 4 little wires go into the dash?? another day, i guess. any info would be helpful. Thanks.

The Orange wire goes to a Hot junction point on a stud on the horn relay, 1/2 way up towards the front, on the Drivers side. Don't have a pic of it but it's below where the new fuse was pictured. You should get wiring diagrams for your 'Vette. E-bay has them, as I am sure numerous sources on here do. You are going to need them. But, yes, the orange wire is a constant hot from the Batt, but fused at 10A, with the old white fuse holder, mine was toast. Runs along the fire wall, then along the drivers inside fender. Follow the original red wire in the pic.

i have been trying to rewire the alternator. i already bought the lectric diagram. it is confusing considering it's age. for intance if you look at it, the brn/wht ~ turns to brn between the aternator and the bulkhead conector. i'm assuming that the connection is at any random point in the harness between the alternator and the bulkhead connector?? but apparently not at the alternator itself for bubba's (appearance) sake?? i had my wife sit in the car and turn the a/c on high while i held the orange wire on the positive terminal of the alternator and the high blower still did not work. it worked when i got the car, untill the orange wire became wrapped around the steering column.

mine is a '73, but I think the '69s are very similar. Re- read my ealier post. I thought it did a pretty good job of expalining how the system works, but let me go into a little more detail. the orange wire is a Fused! hot wire from the Batt terminal, it doesn't matter what batt terminal, just needs to be HOT when the fan is needed. Got to be able to source 10Amps too, that's why GM ran just the high through a relay with a seperate Org hot wire,, the current needed was too hight for a dash switch. How it's made is like this.

the purple wire goes to the blower motor as it's single power source, Just that wire, and a Gnd. The other end of the prl wire goes two locations. 1. the output of the resistor matrix, for all the lower speeds.
2. The blower relay. The blower relay shorts the 2nd stub of the blower power (purple) lead to the Orange (Full 12 V, no resistors) wire for full power. It can do that because there is just one Voltage source and current doesn't flow up hill so to speak. If your having a problem with the fan on high, the post tells you how to determine what it is, but you will need a volt meter, and have to follow the ideas listed. Either you have 12 volts at the end of the Orange wire or you don't. Either the green controll wire is going to High (12V) or it's not. theres also a plug on the blower fan lead. You can take that appart and check there if the other two things are present. If so, but it stilll doesn't work, this would point to a bad relay. Remember, there is a fuse in the orange wire near the power junction. If it shorted when it wraped, it blew this fuse for sure. C.
