Any suggestions on getting the pipe that connects with the muffler
to the Y-pipe, off the Y-pipe? It doesn't appear to be welded, just
rusted together. I got the clamp off of it, and the old muffler is out.
But now I'm having trouble getting the pipe off the Y-pipe at the point
where they overlap.
The clamp will normally crunch the pipe symetrically, leaving an internal ridge. So, the inner portion of the pipe is fitting into an "undercut" in the outer pipe. You'll have to expand the outer pipe. Try heat. Try pounding a thin screwdriver around the circumference and prying, trying not to bend things too badly. If you have an air chisel, rap the joint a few times with that...trying to push the pipes apart. If all else fails, you'll need a "whizzer" to cut the pipe radially, then you'll need to replace it. This is a miserable job...one of those little things that people think will be easy, but it's not. Been there, done that :) Hope this helps. Chuck
I went back out and was working on the remaining pipe when it
became obvious that the Y-pipe was rusted. In fact, it was corroded
so bad at the spot I was working that there would not have been
anything left to clamp onto. So I guess a new Y-pipe is in order.
Oh well, the other muffler was on it's last legs. I'll just change out
everything behind the cat.
Jeez, I hope those bolts come out without screwing up the converter,
I really don't want to replace that. Those bolts are soaking in penetrating oil until the Y-pipe gets here!!!
