My sons 76 ahem Maverick seems to be vapor locking. It runs great can drive for hours, but when you shut down for a few minutes and then restart it stops pumping gas. Anyone have any ideas other than it's a Ford and get rid off it?
LOL.. yes its a ford.. yes.. sell it.. but in the mean time, when it does that is there fuel in the carb or is it draining back out? Have you checked the ingition to see that you have spark? Remember, when you shut the motor off, the temp goes up before it comes down.. it could well be ignition...
The fuel line dries up from the carb to inch before the fuel pump. Once it sits for a while with the hood up it seems to start up with dumping a little gas down the carb. I understand the concept I just don't know how to correct it. Except for the carb, fuel filter and fuel pump it's all original.
Is the car a 6 cyl. or 8? Is it missing the thin metal shield/gasket beneath the carb? This is in place to prevent this exact problem.
Best,
Greg (If it's an early Maverick like a '70 you could always gut it, tub it and drag it. It's light and could be a good quarter-miler.)
You can install a phenolic spacer between the carb and intake to keep heat from transferring to the carb. I have even seen wooden spacers used. Also put heat sheilding around the fuel line next to the engine to keep the fuel from boiling when the engine is shut off.
