The top has broken loose. I looked at it a bit closer and it is only separated from the birdcage by about 1/16". It appears there are a couple of rivets holding it in. It is bare metal (no real rust) underneath and it appears that there was almost no bonding material at the top of the joint. I havent' chipped away the stuff at the bottom of the joint, but there is a large crack with a gap of about 1/16" or so in the sealing material.

Maybe I will shim up the #1 mount a bit, as suggested, and see if it closes up some. I suppose it is possible that it sunk a little up front and the top seal cracked, but the bottom attachments all held. The fender is very solid except for very slight movement at the tip.

Thanks for all of the support and ideas.

if the front clip has seperated/ delamininated from the bird cage, under the windsheild, the only correct thing to do is pull the front end off, .....and the firewall,
clean everything, and put it all back together !
it's a long rough road but it can be done, your basically looking at a body off repair.
