Default Rebuild or Replace?

I have a 1979 with OEM engine. The thing is a dog!
It also eats oil and leaks oil and all kinds of mean nasty ugly things!

I have started to rip it apart. I haven't yet decided if I should rebuild or replace with a faster engine.

On the one hand, I don't plan to try to win shows with it, and I never plan to sell it, so it would seem best to put a faster engine in it.

On the other hand, is it bad karma to not keep it factory?

Any thoughts?

I would pull the original engine and stick it back in storage for future use. Then drop in a crate engine, something like the fastburn 385hp/350ci GM crate engine.

Speaking from experience: Crate engine is the only way to go!

Can anyone recommend where I should look to purchase a "crate engine"?

Pace Performance Products, or just about any other GM performance dealer.
They sell complete engines from $1200-$9000. One of the most popular is the ZZ-4, for about $3500 delivered.
