Default High Energy Ignition?

I have been thinking about going with the Accel points eliminator kit for my ’73. Has anybody tried this unit and does it work good or is there something better on the market. I don’t want to change the distributor but like the idea of going with the high energy ignition

There are several kits like this on the market, the most well-known is probably Pertronix. But you're mixing up your uses. This, as the name says, is a points eliminator kit. It gets rid of the points, but it doesn't give your ignition system any more energy. You no longer have to get into the distributor periodically to change/adjust points. But, since you're using the same ignition coil you've always had, you're getting the same spark energy. Which is fine. If your car is running good now, there's no need to spend money for a high energy ignition. You won't see a boost in horsepower or performance.

As he said, what you're doing is going from a points ignition system to a more maintenance free system, and as he said, it won't produce any more energy. Your ignition and timing should last much longer without periodic resetting, and spark plug life should be improved. This isn't a completely maintenance free system...that doesn't exist, but it will be an improvement over stock.

No coil puts out any more voltage than it takes to fire the spark plugs, so even if you go to a high performance coil, it will still only produce whatever voltage is necessary. The difference is a hi-po coil can put out more voltage should it be necessary. If you keep your engine at peak tune, the stock coil will do all that's necessary. If you allow your engine go out of tune...you may need one of the coils that come in pretty colors or bright chrome.

Thank you for the information. I was wondering about the high energy part myself, but in the Mid America book they have the Accel points Eliminator and it says: "HEI High performance ignition from your stock distributor" , but I don’t doubt what you guys are saying.
I will look into the Pertronix product.
Thanks,
Bill
