OK...took the Vette to the GM dealer and they began the warranty process....1st they made sure the engine was properly tuned (changed plugs, checked/adjusted timing, tuned the Holley)....it still smokes...but only under load (put it in DRIVE and she begins to smoke...like an old hooker)...not while idling in PARK.... What causes this?
Also, they found out when (from a dead standstill) they stomp on the accelerator, the engine BOGGS down...then at around 2,500rpms, she begins to haul a$$! It feels like too much fuel is being admistered. I have a Holley 670 Street Avenger (about 6 mos old)...they checked the float: OK 2) The choke: fully opens 3) Power Valve: OK PLUS this is the same carb that was on the old engine and it performed PERFECTLY.
Next step...tear into the engine and find out the problem...

It doesn't make any sense that they are trying to chase down a tuning issue if indeed it is burning oil smoke. There's so many things that could cause that it's going to be extremely hard to nail down without diving into it. Most probable causes are:
"White smoke or semi white can be produced in several ways. One way is oil this is normally a whitish blue to blue smoke and has the apparent smell of oil being burned. Next could be antifreeze when it is being burned it has a sweet type of smell and tends to dissipate in the air rather quickly. Next is automatic transmission fluid which is normally found on automatic transmissions and its normally drawn into an engine thru a vacuum line via a defective transmission modulator valve or some other defective part. Transmission fluid is very apparent and billows out so bad that you can't see anything behind you. Last but not least another type of smoke that is not white but black is the presents of to much gas/fuel being burned in the engine.
PS the one good thing about transmission fluid being burned is it is an excellent way to clean the carbon out of an engine."
Not a mechanic but heard of this before and found the post. Just seemed relevant when you said it only smokes in gear (drive).

Many dealerships first perform tune ups on warranty situations to eliminate possible detractors to help pinpoint the problem or issue. I`m not sure it`s done universally.
Stuart, I may have missed something in your threads but I don't recall you ever stating how much oil you have used as of this point.
I know you only have low miles on the engine but how much have you used?

Really not quite sure...I've changed oil in her twice (as per the break-in instructions Castrol GTX 10w30). When I checked it this last time (about 2 days ago) the reading was down about 1/4 of a qt at 500 miles on the engine. Wrote it off to "new engine syndrome". The bluish-white smoke is "medium-light", primarily evident when in DRIVE and less in PARK.
Got the word today...the dealership mechanic (the same one I use all the time) pulled the valve covers and found one of the valve guide seals had "rolled on to the spring"...whatever that means. So to be on the safe side, they ordered 16 new valve guide seals (or valve guides...not quite sure, but I trust the mechanic) and they will be here tomorrow!! According to the mechanic, the shop foreman and the service mgr...this should fix the problem...I CERTAINLY HOPE SO!!
Well I dont think that burning a little bit of oil through the valve would cause the motor to run like garbage. I think there is more of an underlying issue other then that. I would think that was the tip of the iceburg.
