Default Busted belt, replacement options

Seems as though I'm posting something new every day...sorry...

Last night I saw a mushroom cloud of smoke go out from under my hood. Stunk like rubba. Yep, belt going to the AC.

Not a big deal, no damage done, however, how do I replace the belt, whats the best way to get ahold of one, and should I do the other belts for maintenence records purposes?!

Did the AC compressor seize up?

Any parts store should have a belt.

Ummm...:o

I dunno. How do I check if the AC seized? I just assumed the belt was at fault because of the aging in the belts.

on your 76? i just installed new belts in my 70. i first went to autozone and got some dayco brand belts. they sat deep in the pulleys. went to bennett auto and got some goodyear gator brand. they felt heavier and sat up in the pully the way they should. i had to buy several sizes, and return the unused belts to find the correct length.

See if you can spin the pulley by hand.
Was the A/C running at the time the belt failed?

A cloud of smoke would lead me to believe that something seized up rather than just the belt breaking.

The AC pulley will turn freely since the clutch won't be engaged. Try to turn the center part which will be turning the compressor itself.

ok, went home on my lunch hour, and checked out a little more.

A/C was not on when the belt broke/smoke came out...

the spindle on the very end moves freely, but the v-area where the belt sits won't budge...

Sounds like the compressor clutch bearing. Better this than the compressor. You can replace the bearing or buy a rebuilt or new clutch assembly. You should consider having a professional install if your unsure how to install the belts.
