Default Power Steering Cylinder Question.

Rebuilding my P/S cylinder, as part of a total body off resto. I have the shop manual, but the drawing only shows the seal outside the cylinder on the rod end. Can the top, (the square block on the front, or Rod End) be removed, or is it factory sealed? Usually any hydraulic cylinder that I have worked on has at least one removable cap, to replace it's inner piston seal. There is evidience that someone tried to remove it in the pass, pipe wrench scars

Any advise you guys have is always is always appreciated.

Asked the same question a couple of days ago. They must come apart. The rod had to get in there somehow.

Maybe it's factory sealed after they insert the rod, although I don't know why.

Thanks

Am I missing something? Are you guys having trouble with the rebuild?
Remove the snap ring,remove old seal assembly,install new 3 part(including snap-ring).

Thanks for the info. The problem we are having is that in the rebuild manual and in the new rebuild kit that we received, there is five (5) replacement parts, including the snap ring. It looked pretty simple at first but when I opened the replacement kit I had extra parts. Just checking the forum to clear up the confusion.

You have 5 parts in NEW kit? Thats unusual the NEW kits have 3 parts.
Hmmm maybe they are reproducing like original.

I just did this last weekend and there are 5 parts to replace. I used all parts in the kit. I had to stare at the thing for an hour to realize that the seal is outside of the cap and that it doesn't pull out with the rod The instructions were non-existent. However, it is obvious that the cylinder top is mig welded on.

When you remove three pieces you see metal. That is a washer, not the end cap. Once you poke at this and get it out, you will see the main seal. You have to pick at this seal in order to get it out. Be carefull not to scratch your rod or you will have liaks.

Good luck

This blowup drawing shows the original five piece seal package and the later three piece package.

The piston ring is not serviceable. The end caps are welded in place.
