I'm installing some new Spicer u joints. These have no zerk fitting as everyone suggests because they're stronger. Do I have to grease these before installing or are they ready to go?
Thanks?
These are great. Why some guys insist on the type that require greasing is beyond me. I've got a Jeep in the family that has them (factory installed) and they've never been touched yet and the truck has over 200k on it.
One other dumb question. Are the clips that go on the ends spacers, or do they serve some other purpose? On my car, the ones that go into closed flanges have the clips, the ones that have tapered bearing caps have no clips. Is that right?
Thanks.
Assuming you have a pre 80 model, on the outboard side where the flange is, you should have the clips on all 4. On the inboard side, you should only have 2 and they are for the caps that are in the half shaft end yoke. Yes they serve a purpose and you need to use them. The prevent the caps from falling out.
If you have never done u-joints before, you will have to make sure you re-inforce the outer flange or else it will bend. You can fab up a plate or use your spindle flange. If you use your spindle flange, make you you torque the spindle nut to 100 ft/lbs when you put it back on.
Thanks. Actually I bought a set of Denny's halfshafts with a new set of yoke flanges installed. That's the part that's known to bend, right? The flat flange by the wheel? The new half shafts have the u joints installed, so I'm set with that. I do want to replace the u joints on the front driveshaft. Do they need to be pressed in? Are they difficult to change?
Are those yoke flanges pretty strong? I plan to drag race and I'm trying to buy all heavy duty parts.
