They can be loud. I have 2 holleys and they make alot of noise. The carter I think are quieter but I have never had one. If you upgrade your fuel system usually you mount a pump at the tank to push the fuel forward. If you are running a stock motor it is easy to switch back to the stock pump and remove the electric.

is there any benifit to an electric pump over stock?
In conjunction w/mech, it provides a secondary source of fuel pressure which is critical in nitrous applications.
A mechanical only is more than adequate for the normal street performance engine.
