I bought and installed a new Carter fuel pump recently and ever since I have been having a very small fuel leak. I think the leak is being caused by pressure building up in the fuel line leading to the pump because the pump I bought has no return line accomodation. The pump seems to work fine, no vapor lock, but obviously I have to do something to address the leak. There is no puddle of gas but the smell is fairly strong, will a pressure regulator fix my problem or not?
The line to the pump from the tank is under suction, not pressure. It can though still leak, usually when the car is shut off. Check for wet lines.
The pressure regulater will only solve your problem if you use the return feature with it.
But you already have that in your car with the proper standard pump. I would go back to stock pump with return.
The Carter may have more pressure than your carb needs and therefore the smell when it overcomes the needle and seat.
It is leaking while shut off, I think the line that is leaking is the line from the tank to the pump. So my problem is just a loose line and not pressure? If so I was going to upgrade to a braided steel fuel line soon anyway....
